AS you can see we buy and sell valuable pennies. These Large cents are sometimes called Big pennies or large pennies but this is not the correct wording for these coins. They are what they say they are and that is One Cent. Just look at the back and read the words. But with the size much bigger than the one cents (pennies) we use today. So, numismatics and coin dealers call these old coins ( Large Cents). At RGCD we pay top dollar for all better Large cents and early Large cents too. Please offer us any large cent coins you have for sale. We are ANA Professionally Qualified NGC Rare Coin Dealers in Raleigh,NC.

First struck in 1793, the large cent was coined every year from 1793 to 1857 except 1815; When the United States declared war in 1812 against Great Britain, coinage was affected. The wartime embargo against shipments made it so the mint could not get any new copper planchets, which were imported from Great Britain, to strike coins. The mint made do with what supply it had and struck coins into 1815. After the war ended in 1815, the mint wasted no time in ordering new planchets. For an unknown reason no coins were dated 1815 from the supply the mint had in the interim. In addition to the copper shortage, people also hoarded precious metals during the war. Large cents were made of nearly pure copper, or copper as pure as it emerged from smelting, without any deliberate addition of other metals (such as occurs in bronze). So early on all Large cents were RED in color.Later after circulation many of these large cents turned red and brown in color. Today most old large cents are a brown color because of  people's hands or to be the most accurate because of the oil on them. 1816 Large Cent front side or obverse side in extra fine condition

One of our needed coins right now are the Coronet Head Large Cents

these cents were minted from 1816-1836. The front or more correctly the obverse featured the head of Miss Liberty, facing to the left. Her appearance is much more mature and the head design has been the basis of much criticism. The late Walter Breen called it “a spectacularly ugly head of Ms. Liberty”, at Raleigh Gold Coin Dealers Louis finds this design rather nice and mature. We buy these cents in high grade because we understand these are valuable pennies.Miss Liberty wears a headband, inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and thirteen stars surrounding her near the rim. The date is at the bottom of the coin on the obverse. This design would last until 1836, when Christian Gobrecht, best known for his design work on the Liberty Seated silver coinage, would make some modifications. minted from 1808-1814 these have been harder for us to find here around Raleigh,NC.  These Classic Head Large Cents were designed by John Reich and featured the head of Liberty, facing left for the first time on the large cents. Miss Liberty's hair is in curls, and held together with a headband, which might have originated in ancient Greece, inscribed with LIBERTY when minted in Philadelphia. For the first time, stars were placed adjacent to the portrait on the obverse, 13 stars in total, one for each of the original states. Half Cent

The US Mint first minted Half Cents in 1793. The design changed many times at first, with low relief, then high relief half cents being minted. The years of 1798 and 1799 however no half cents were minted at all. But, in 1800 they started up the coining presses again to strike more half cents. From 1802-1811 half cents were produced every year. We are ANA Professionally Qualified NGC Coin Dealers in Raleigh,NC. Experts in the study of Half Cent coins. We pay the most because we understand the most ! Buying all Half Cents from good condition to mint condition. At Raleigh Gold Coin Dealers we are looking to buy all Half Cents you may have found in your coin collection. We have a great need for the dates from 1793 to 1811. Please offer any of these half cents to us for a strong offer to buy. The US Mint stop minting half cents the following year in 1812 because of the great war. These latter date half cents are more easy to find than the pre 1812 years. Raleigh Gold Coin Dealers buys even these later date half cents at our Raleigh coin shop. Just call or email for more info. Indian Head Cents ( Pennies )

Louis Gouchie: Indian Head Cents were first produced in 1859. The obverse depiction of a  American Indian is actually a head of Miss Liberty with an Indian chief's headdress and just called a Indian Head Cent. The following year in 1860 the wreath was changed or altered and a  shield was added to the top part of the reverse or back of the penny. The first 5 years of the Indian Head cents 1859-1864  the pennies were made from a mixture of copper-nickel. The planchets or blanks were thicker and also the color was different from the older copper minted large cents from the years before. Late In 1864 the weight of the Indian cent was reduced because the metal composition reverted back to bronze, which is a copper alloy. At Raleigh Gold Coin Dealers we sell & buy all others early Indian Head pennies. What interesting history they hold. From late 1864 till 1908 not much changed on this coin. All the cents were minted in Philadelphia and used in daily commerce from coast to coast. Then in 1908 and and in 1909 these Indian Cents Cents were minted in San Francisco CA. The S-Mints are scarcer than the Philadelphia minted cents.  We are ANA Professionally Qualified NGC Coin Dealers in Raleigh,NC. Experts in the study of Indian Head Cents. We pay the most because we understand the most ! Buying all Indian Pennies today.

Rare 1855 Flying Eagle Pattern cent or penny

exciting patterns

exciting patterns

exciting patterns

What the heck you say. Patterns ?

Here is a 1855 Flying Eagle Pattern It is fully struck with hardly a mark. The color is a glossy brown with some lighter areas in protected areas. Only 100 were believed struck in copper and bronze. This is attributed as the copper version. Only 20 copper examples are believed to have been struck. NGC graded PR62.

At Raleigh Gold Coin Dealers we buy & sell pattern coins. For those of you not familiar with this fascinating area of numismatics, patterns are prototypes for coins that, for the most part, were never approved for circulation. These patterns are more like test pieces. A few are minted and looked at, handled and thought about. Do we or should we make many others of these. Go into full production mode ? Many times the answer has been no. Most patterns are very rare, some unique, and others unknown outside of museums. But, at Raleigh Gold Coin Dealers we do buy and sell rare pattern coins from time to time. If you have any of these rare coins Please give us a call
