General information about Morgan Silver Dollars:  After a five-year suspension of minting Silver Dollars for circulation in the United States, the Bland-Allison Act (the Act of February 28, 1878) resumed the minting coinage of the Silver Dollar. The famous and well collected design chosen was created by George T. Morgan. The lady on the front or obverse of the silver dollar was a model school teacher. Morgan Silver Dollars were minted in great overall numbers ( Not Rare ) and to this day, they are collected by many coin collectors. Morgan Silver Dollars were produced by the US Mint from 1878 to 1904, then again in 1921. The 

U.S. Mints that produced Morgan Silver Dollars include Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Denver, and Carson City.  Mintmarks for all of these mints except Philadelphia were placed on the reverse of the coins just beneath the ribbon bow of the wreath. 

The 1921 dated Morgan Silver Dollars are still very common today.

The Morgan dollar was a large United States dollar coin minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921.  The coin is named after its designer, United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. The obverse depicts a profile portrait representing Liberty, while the reverse depicts an eagle with wings outstretched. Morgan Silver Dollars are easy to find at most coin shops anywhere in this country. Millions and Millions were minted most years from the start in 1878 to about 1893 when production came down somewhat. Again in 1896 minting numbers went up again to the Millions. Here is some information of the cleaning of coins. Rule #1 Never clean a coin. Over the years, many collectible coins have suffered from attempts at cleaning that alter their surfaces and decrease their numismatic value.  On a common low value coin this will not cost the owner of the coins much, but on a rare Morgan Dollar or even a scarce Peace Dollar it will make the coin of much lower value. So, read rule #1 again. Never clean a coin.

This is not a coin restoration to fill in holes or attempt to add back details to the coin. In the early 1960's, a large quantity of uncirculated Morgan dollars in their original bags were discovered in the Treasury vaults, including issues once thought rare. The 1903-O New Orleans minted Morgan Dollar was valued at about $1,500 Each in new uncirculated condition. But the coin market had changed for good.  The 1878 VAM-9 Morgan Silver Dollar is the very first set of dies used to strike Morgan dollars! The 1878 VAM-9 is an 8 tailfeather coin with the A1h reverse. Detective work has revealed they began striking the new Morgan coins at 3:17 PM on March 11, 1878. The combination of the die and the time is known because a reporter was present at the event and the first coins struck were presentation pieces for President Rutherford B. Hayes. Rutherford Birchard Hayes was the 19th President of the United States. His specific coin has been preserved and studied for die features and subsequently identified as a VAM-9.
